One type of reading material, recount text, is a text which retells events or experiences in the past. Its purpose is to inform or retell something that happened in the past or a series of past event. Therefore, students must know what they read by quickly locating main idea of the text and finding specific information. They can help the students to get the ideas from the sources he/ she read, such as scanning and skimming technique. Since many students have difficulties in getting the ideas or information from the sources, this research is conducted to see whether scanning and skimming technique can improve the students’ reading comprehension ability of recount text. This research is a quantitative research based on experimental method. In conducting the research, the researcher used one group pre test post test design. The objective of this research are to see whether there is a significant improvement of students’ reading comprehension ability of recount text after being taught through scanning and skimming technique. The population and sample of this research were the second grade students of SMPN 1 Gedongtataan Pesawaran. Class VIIID was chosen as experimental class. This research was conducted from Februari to March 2011. In collecting the data, the researcher administered the pretest and posttest. The pretest was given to know the basic students’ ability in reading. Posttest was given to know the result of students reading test after being taught through scanning and skimming technique. The data was analyzed by using repeated measures T-test. In which the significance was determined by p<0.05. The total score of pretest is 2135 and in posttest the total score is 2845, and the gain is 725. It shows that the increase of students’ score is 710. The result of t-test computation shows that t-ratio is higher than t-table, that is (13.060>1.697), which proves that there is a significant improvement of students’ reading comprehension ability of recount text through scanning and skimming technique. In other word, the hypothesis is accepted. However, it is suggested that the teacher should introduce the text before giving the material to the students. So that, it will be make the students easier to find out the specific information and determining the main idea of the recount text. } }
