Smoking can cause problems in oral cavity. Gingiva is a soft tissue in the oral cavity functioned as a supporter of hard tooth tissue. The heat of cigarette smokes causes an increase in blood flow so that the gingiva turns to be red and enlarged, which is a clinical sign of gingivitis. Research purpose: To find out the difference of gingival status between smokers and non-smokers in a group of members of youth organization in GundenganKidul sub-district, Margorejo. Method: This research uses analytical survey with cross sectional approach. The sample is collected using non-probability sampling, which is purposive sampling. The number of sample is 25 smokers and 25 non-smokers in a group of members of youth organization in GundenganKidul sub-district, Margorejo. Sample is collected based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data collection method is interview and examination of gingival status. Research result:The result shows that the smokers been smoking in a long time (>2 years) is 80%, and the number of cigarette per day is in a low category (68%), which is 1-10 cigarettes. The type of cigarette consumed is filter cigarette (96%). The number of smokers who experience mild inflammation is higher than those experience moderate inflammation, which is 19 people (76%). Most of non-smoker respondents have healthy gingival than mild inflammation, which is 16 people (64%). The result of Kruskall Wallis shows that there is difference of gingival status between smokers and non-smokers (p<0.05). Conclusion: That there is difference of gingival status between smokers and non-smokers in a group of members of youth organization in GundenganKidul, Margorejo.
