ABSTRACT

Khan el Khalili is the second novel written by Najib Mahfuzh in which it is much figuring out about social reality of Egyptians in Cairo after Al-Qahirah Al-Jadidah (1945). To produce a totally realism novel, whenever Najib Mahfuzh writes a novel, he always being in the middle of society who become the object of his writing. When he writes Khan el Khalili, he sits down in an unpretentious cafe in Khan el Khalili village for several hours every day. He does it for two years by keeping attention and listening people chatting. In this research, the researcher prefer to use this novel as the object because it is considered having many interesting side which make the researcher interested to conduct a research toward this novel. Khan el Khalili is considered as the important novel in writing carrier of Najib Mahfuz.     

The objectives of this study are to analyze the condition of main character?s psychology and to analyze the types of need asserted in Najib Mahfuz?s Khan el Khalili  which seen from Abraham Maslow?s perspective about five hierarchy needs.

The researcher uses descriptive qualitative method that is a method that is used to understand such phenomena which occur toward a certain object such as attitude, cognition, motivation, and action through descriptive process in the form of word or language. While in collecting data, the researcher uses library research method. In addition, the way to analyze the data is by looking for the suitable data with the theme, then classify the suitable data above by using Abraham Maslow?s psychological humanistic  as the tool of analysis.

The result of this research shows that the condition of main character, Ahmad which is considered as immature in his age, it makes him become an odd person. This occurred when Ahmad was living in Sakakini village. When he moved to Khan el Khalili village, he began his new life with the new atmosphere which was safe from German army. Ahmad is able to fulfill the fourth of basic needs as Abraham Maslow?s theory i.e. the need of physiology, safety, love and appreciation. After all the fourth needs above are fulfilled, Ahmad is able to fulfill the need of self-actualization.  The fulfillment of basic needs has influence toward individual motivation in doing action. Hence, when someone live in four fulfilled basic needs, his condition will be health in the range of psychology

ABSTRAK

Novel sebagai bentuk karya sastra merupakan jalan hidup yang di dalamnya terjadi peristiwa dan perilaku yang dialami dan diperbuat manusia (tokoh). Novel merupakan prosa fiksi yang berisi tentang kehidupan tokohnya dari awal hingga akhir. Novel sendiri merupakan gambaran hidup tokoh yang menceritakan hampir seluruh perjalanan hidup tokoh. Penokohan serta karakter tokoh dalam novel digambarkan dengan lengkap atau jelas oleh pengarang. Setiap tokoh juga diberi gambaran fisik dan kejiwaan yang berbeda-beda sehingga cerita tersebut seperti nyata atau menjadi hidup. Dari segi kejiwaan, sastra bisa dipelajari dan ditelaah dengan menggunakan teori psikologi. Dengan latar belakang inilah peneliti memilih novel Khan el Khalili ini karena mempunyai banyak keistimewaan yang membuatnya menarik untuk dilakukan penelitian.
