ABSTRACT Reading is one of language skills is not easy. Reading is not just recite a single letter or sentence alone but also to understand the meaning contained in the text. Reading skills are regarded as the primary skills of a variety of foreign language skills. Reading skills also serve as a very important skill and useful so that the main goal in learning a foreign language. In this study, researchers found some problems in learning Arabic in Madrasah Aliyah Al-Maarif Singosari Malang, especially in reading skills. Most of the students were able to read Arabic but they can not understand the passage in detail, because of the lack of teaching methods that teachers use the Arabic language there. So that they find it difficult to learn the Arabic language. Therefore, researchers conducted this study using cooperative learning model is broken square in learning reading skills. The purpose of this research is to investigate the application of broken square in learning reading skills and to determine the effectiveness of broken square in teaching reading skills. This research method using an experimental method that is quasi-experimental design with nonequivalent control group design forms and using a quantitative approach. The data collection techniques are observation, test, interviews, questionnaires and documents. Data analysis techniques in this study using quantitative methods. The results of the research the application of cooperative learning model of broken square with eight steps of the division of the class into groups. And the implementation of cooperative learning model of broken square in learning reading skills in MA Almaarif is effective. From the results of the pre-test = 56.2, and the results of post-test = 83.2. With the results "t test" 4.46% greater than the significance level of 1% = 2.660% as well as 5% = 2,000, which means received or the research hypothesis is accepted. And the implementation of cooperative learning model of broken square influential in teaching reading skills. ABSTRAK Membaca adalah salah satu keterampilan bahasa yang tidak mudah. Membaca bukan hanya melafalkan suatu huruf atau kalimat saja akan tetapi juga memahami makna yang terkandung dalam bacaan tersebut. Keterampilan membaca dinggap sebagai keterampilan utama dari berbagai keterampilan bahasa asing. Keterampilan membaca juga dijadikan sebagai keterampilan yang sangat penting dan bermanfaat sehingga menjadi tujuan utama dalam pembelajaran bahasa asing. Pada penelitian ini, peneliti menemukan beberapa masalah dalam pembelajaran bahasa arab di Madrasah Aliyah Al-Maarif Singosari Malang khususnya pada keterampilan membaca. Sebagian besar siswa mampu membaca bahasa arab akan tetapi mereka tidak dapat memahami bacaan tersebut secara terperinci, karena kurangnya metode pembelajaran yang digunakan guru bahasa arab disana. Sehingga mereka merasa kesulitan untuk mempelajari bahasa arab. Oleh karena itu, peneliti melakukan penelitian ini dengan menggunakan model pembelajaran kooperatif broken square dalam pembelajaran keterampilan membaca.
