Metropolitan cities in Indonesia such as Jakarta and Tangerang are highly exposed by air pollution. Air pollution will affect human health condition who lives inside the affected areas. To recover from health problem, citizen needs to access medical services. Accessing medical services will push them to expend more income. To mitigate the medical expenditure problems, household may rely on insurance scheme. This study estimates the impact of the deterioration of air quality on the coverage of health insurance among household in Indonesia using Indonesian Family Life Surveys. The main finding of this study is that there is a negative relationship between the rise of SPM concentration and the coverage of health insurance in Indonesia. This implies that, while the sample of the surveys represented 87% of Indonesian population, they mostly contain household who lives in big cities, which is usually highly polluted, and more prone to various social problems such as unemployment, poverty, and health problems. Therefore, the jobless and the poor that unexpectedly exposed by air pollution will have less possibility to be enrolled in health insurance. To cope with this problem, the government need to create a specifically designated health benefit program related to air pollution, targeting the poor people who live in the polluted area.} }
