		abstract={Metanil yellow merupakan pewarna nonpangan yang sering disalahgunakan sebagai pewarna makanan. Konsumsi metanil yellow dalam jangka panjang akan menyebabkan pengendapan dan akumulasi dalam darah, merusak jaringan, ginjal, serta dapat menyebabkan kanker saluran ataupun kandung kemih. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membuat indicator strip yang dapat mendeteksi metanil yellow dalam makanan. Indicator strip dibuat dengan metode solvent impregnation dengan kertas Whatman sebagai basis indikator direndam dalam pereaksi khusus yang dapat mendeteksi gugus fungsi dalam metanil yellow, yaitu pereaksi asam klorida 8 N, Mandelin, Simon, dan Lieberman. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa indicator strip dapat dibuat dengan metode solvent impregnation dan memiliki waktu impregnasi optimum selama 30 menit untuk pereaksi asam klorida 8 N dan Mandelin serta 60 menit untuk pereaksi Simon dan Lieberman. Indicator strip memiliki ketegaran yang baik karena tidak bereaksi positif dengan pewarna makanan kuning lainnya.Metanil yellow is nonfood color agent that is often misused as food colorant. Long term consumption of metanil yellow can cause its accumulation in blood, damage body tissues, kidney, and cause bladder cancer. The purpose of this research is creating an indicator strip that is capable to detect metanil yellow in the food. This indicator strip was made by using solvent impregnation method with Whatman paper as indicator base that was submerged in special reagents that can detect the functional groups in metanil yellow. The special reagents used in this research were hydrochloride acid 8 N, Mandelin, Simon, and Lieberman. The result of this research showed that indicator strip can be made using solvent impregnation method and the optimum time of impregnation in hydrochloride acid and Mandelin reagent was 30 minutes, while the optimum time of impregnation in Simon, and Lieberman reagent was 1 hour. Indicator strip has good toughness because it couldn’t give positive reaction to the other yellow food colorants.Keywords: metanil yellow, specific reagents, indicator strip, solvent impregnation}
