The purpose is to analyze the main character using qualitative data. Stella Grant is an optimistic person who always very diligent in undergoing treatment at the hospital. She does not want to make her parents sad because her parents will lose her if she dies. But then, she meets Will Newman, a pessimistic person who encourages Stella to think in a realistic way. After her best friend dies, she realizes that she is being too hard on herself. The writer used Snyder?s in Goleman?s book (2002) optimism values high expectations, not easy to give up, able to be self-motivated, high self-confidence, not easy to surrender. The result, shows that there are five values in the data namely: five data of high expectations, six data of not easy to give up, five data of able to be self-motivated, six data of high self-confidence, four data of not easy to surrender. The most dominant optimism values of the main character are high expectations and not easy surrender behavior. Keywords: character, characterization, optimism, optimism values} }
