News encompassesdifferent types of information, one of which is hard news requires immediate reporting due to its quickly diminishing relevance. Journalists must choose their 
words carefully to ensure clear and accurate information.Hedging allows journalists to add caution and nuance, preventing definitive claims that could escalate conflicts or mislead readers. Hence, this study aims to discover the classification and function of hedging in hard news of The New York Times, focusing on the Israeli-Palestinian War in October 2023. Using the classifications 
by Fraser (2010) and the functions by Hyland (1996), this sutdy employed a qualitative-descriptive method. The findings reveal that introductory phrases, modal adjectives, and modal verbs are predominantly used by writers and serve a content-motivated function in delivering sensitive news reports concerning international conflicts. These hedging techniques assist writers in mitigating uncertainty, avoiding bias, and shielding against potential criticism by rendering statements less assertive.}
