Abstract :
Extra high voltage overhead line can transmit power to thousand mega watts. Based on the importance of this extra high voltage overhead line, then a reliable protection system is required. Each section of the transmission network
equipped with main and backup protection system to prevent operation failure. Backup protection will only work (with time delay) if the main protection fails to work. Time delay is intended to give a chance for main protection to work first to
avoid the release of two section at once. The main protection relay of EHV overhead line using distance relay or line current differential relay, the selection of the used relay depend on the length of transmission line protected. Backup protection using step distance relay which equipped with directional earth fault.
The thesis discusses the distance relay and line current differential relay. As for the relay telecommunication channel using PLC, fiber optic or microwave.
