Abstract :
Water hammer occurs in the channel that is pressure flow. Air is not allowed to enter the tailrace tunnel. In the construction of Jatigede 2 X 55 MW hydropower project that is EPC (engineering procurement, construction), the contractor assumes that the tailrace tunnel channel is pressure flow, so that the Tailrace Surge Shaft variable is based on assumption, but after study based on existing theory, the tailrace tunnel channel is an open channel flow. Presents the data and supporting theories to test the truth of the assumption that aims to know the concept of use and discharge schemes when hydropower is operated on Tailrace Surge Shaft Jatigede Hydroelectric Power Plant 2 X 55 MW, knowing the hydraulic variables that become the reference in the actual Tailrace Surge Shaft construction design. To test these assumptions, used descriptive method by systematically describing the data, hydraulic variables and calculation results obtained. From the calculations that have been obtained, the flow on the tailrace tunnel is open channel flow and the optimal diameter result of Tailrace Surge Shaft is 10 m from the originally of 17.2 m. This calculation can be a reference in analyzing the use of Tailrace Surge Shaft buildings on a hydropower plant that has a long tailrace channel. This research only discusses the use of Tailrace Surge Shaft which includes calculation of channel cross section, submergence, and surging when a water hammer occurs at the maximum discharge with an obstacle in the tailrace tunnel.
