Abstract :
Penetration of renewable energy powerplants in Indonesia is increasing to meet target of energy mix in the RUPTL. Large-scale PV plants can be built and connected to power systems. However, power plants from Variable Renewable Energy categories such as PV plants are intermittent and disruptive for power systems stability. Pumped Storage (PS) hydro power plant is capable of balancing out the intermittent nature of PV plants, due to its fast ramping-rate. This research models the operation of a system where there is a PS hydro power plant as an energy storage system as well as the integration of large-scale PV plants into the power system. The analysis is to define the operating pattern of the system when large-scale PV plants as the main plant combined with pumped storage hydropower as an energy storage, to meet the system load with two scenarios, namely during dayload and nightload. Then further analysis is implementation of economic dispatch formulation scheme with the method of equal lambda on thermal plants (steam plant and diesel generator) to divide the output power of the plant. The results of this research concluded that the modeling and simulation of operation hybrid system was carried out by combining conventional thermal plant units with intermittent VRE plants and energy storage using a sea water pumped hydro storage system. This scheme can be applied for small to medium sized islands to support local economic activities by utilizing local renewable energy potential
