Abstract :
This study aimed to develop the TOEFL-like placement test items and
assessed the quality of STKIP PGRI Sidoarjo's TOEFL-like test items. Adapting
the Borg & Gall model, the researcher applied the Research & Development
(R&D) procedure. The development?s product, @joe_analysis, became the
answer based on need analysis. The quality of the test items in TOEFL-like
placement test items were classified into validity, reliability, index difficulty, and
discriminating power. The field testing was done by 18 students who had to
undertake a placement test. The results showed 30 valid items in the listening
section, 18 items were field tested valid in the ?Structure & Written Expression?
section and 23 items were classified as valid in the ?Reading Comprehension?
section. The ?Listening Comprehension? section items had a reliability index of
0.887 indicating ?Very Good Reliability? and the index of 0.999 in the section
?Structure & Written Expression? indicating as ?Excellent Reliability? and were
classed as ?Good Reliability? with a reliability index of 0.753 in ?Reading
Comprehension? section. Based on the index difficulty's results, the ?Listening
Comprehension? section, the difficult category contained 28 items (56%) while
the medium category contained 22 items (44%). In ?Structure & Written
Expression?, the index difficulty category had 28 medium items (70%) while the
difficulty category had 22 items (30%). In the ?Reading Comprehension? section,
the difficult category included 21 items (42%), the medium had 22 (58%) and the
easy had none (0%). The ?Discrimination Index? resulted in: ?Listening
Comprehension? section, 16 items scored enough, 7 items scored good. The
?Structure & Written Expression? section, 16 items scored enough, 7 items scored
good. The ?Reading Comprehension? section, 13 items scored enough, 3 items
scored good. The experts? comments were found valid in the product development
materials and it may serve as inspiration for future TOEFL-like placement tests.
