Abstract :
Role play is very important in teaching speaking because it gives students an
opportunity to practice communicating in different social contexts and in different
social roles. In addition, it also allows students to be creative and to put
themselves in another person?s place for a while. In learning English speaking
ability, the students often find some problems. The problem frequently found
that?s students are lack of ability to practice the target language in daily
conversation. This study aims to describe the implementation and students?
perceptions in teaching speaking narrative texts using role play. This research
method was descriptive qualitative method. A lecturer and 20 students of the first
semester English education study program at STKIP PGRI Sidoarjo as research
subjects. Researchers got research data from observation field note, observation
checklists and questionnaires. Finding of this study shows that (1) the
implementation of role play in teaching speaking narrative texts begins with the
lecturer give explanation about the role play strategies in teaching speaking. Then
the students make groups then each student in each group write his ideas that
would be told based on the tittle narrative text. Then students arranged in the form
of narrative text about the topic that would be spoken. After that, based on
teacher?s order, the students practiced speaking in front of the class and continued
with the teacher's evaluation. (2) The students? perception on the implementation
of Role Play in speaking narrative texts received positive perceptions from
students. The results of the questionnaire showed that 40% strongly agree, 55%
agree, 5% disagree, and 0% do not strongly agree from the explanation above, it
can be seen that the main goal of learning to speak using Role Play can be
successful
