Abstract :
The aim of this research was to improve students? achievement in reading
comprehension by using the SQ3R (Survey Question Read Recite Review)
technique to the 8th grade students at SMPN 49 Surabaya in the academic year
2020/2021. Classroom action research was implemented into two cycles where
there were three meetings in each cycle including four steps called: planning,
action, observation and reflection. Observation and test were used in gaining the
data as the instruments of this research. The result showed there were significant
improvements in the students? achievement in reading comprehension on the
implementation SQ3R. In the pre-test, the mean score was 65.16, the lowest score
was 56 and the highest score was 80. The numbers of the students who passed the
test were 5 students (13.16%). Then, in cycle I, the mean score was 73.37, the
lowest score was 60, the highest score was improving from pre-test to post-test
conducted which were 84. In cycle II, the mean score was 81.26, the highest score
was 92, the lowest score was 72. Related to the students who passed the tests as
the indicator of success of the research, the students who passed the tests were 32
students (84.21%). It means the research was stopped based on the Minimum
Mastery Criteria (KKM) standard at SMPN 49 Surabaya, the indicator of
successful learning process is that if at least 75% of students? score are > 75.
