Abstract :
The researcher considers that this research is a case study and it uses descriptive qualitative method. The subjects of the research are the first grade students of MTsN Diwek Jombang 2011/2012 and an English teacher who handles the classes. The data are collected through two techniques, namely questionnaire and interview. The questionnaire is to find out the students demotivation problems in reading English textbook and the factors. The interview is used to obtain the strategies applied by the teacher to overcome the problems.
The finding shows that, first, the problems really happen among students, of course, with the different portions. Some of those problems are lack of desire to read, no pleasure to read, feel bored to read, etc. Second, there are certain factors that influence them. The factor can be from the content or materials of the textbook, students attitude toward reading or socio cultural environment. Third, the teacher uses some strategies to overcome the problems, for example, using reinforcement strategies in teaching reading by giving the students appropriate rewards to their positive behaviors.
Based on the findings, it is suggested that the students should be more understandable to kinds of factors that cause them demotivated. It is also suggested that the teachers should learn better to apply the techniques of teaching reading skill. The teachers should be more creative in applying their techniques. By doing this, it
will make the reading class runs well without any distractions from students demotivation problems.
