ABSTRACT
This research aimed to find out the students’ grammatical errors in writing
recount text and the factors of error. The present researcher used descriptive
qualitative method. It was conducted at the tenth graders of MA NW Pancor in
school year 2018/2019 . There were 4 classes and the researcher used random
sampling technique. In this case, X IPA was chosen as the sample of study. And it
consisted of 20 students. The data were collected by asking the participants to
write their unforgettable moment that they have done. The participants’ work
sheets were analyzed to find out the students’ grammatical errors. The analysis
showed the most dominant error were in verb tense that was 38,09 %; 33,34% was
errors in using punctuation;12,69% was errors in using capitalization; 11,12% was
errors in misspelling; 3,18% was omitting apostrophe; 1,58% was error in word
order. While, related to the factors that influence the students’ ability in writing
the simple recount text. The result of interview showed that the students who got
lowest errors percentage had been influenced by external and internal factors,
especially motivation and supports from parents, teachers, and their interest in
learning English.
