ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was to get explanation about the students‟ difficulties
and the factors causing the difficulties in learning reported speech. The researcher
used qualitative method with descriptive analysis to analyze the data. To know the
causes of the students‟ difficulties in learning reported speech, the researcher took
the data by giving questionnaire and test about reported speech, and interview
some students. The participants of this research was the second graders of the
Study Program of English Language Education of Hamzanwadi University. The
researcher took one class; it was twenty-nine students. The result of this research
showed that the students got difficulties in transforming direct speech into
indirect/reported speech. The students got the difficulties in learning reported
speech because they did not pay attention to reported speech and less practice.
Besides, they did not do the exercise about reported speech. Therefore, they
should pay attention more to their lecturer when he/she is explaining the lesson.
They should do more assignment, and learn more about how to transform direct
speech question into indirect speech question.
