ABSTRACT
The objectives of the current study can be formulated as follows: (1) To find out
whether communicative procedure can improve grammar about simple past tense in
teaching speaking for the second semester of early childhood education program (PG
PAUD) in academic year 2018-2019, (2) To identify how far the communicative procedure
can improve grammar about simple past tense in teaching speaking for the second semester
of (PG PAUD) in academic year 2018-2019. The main purpose of this research was to
know the improvement of speaking ability at EFL class. Specifically, the subject of this
study was 18 students of A class at second semester of (PG PAUD) of Hamzanwadi
university in academic year 2018-2019. Designed as pre-experimental research, the
techniques of collecting data were pre-test and post-test in similar form. Pre-test was
conducted before the researcher began the teaching learning process and post-test after four
meetings of treatment. Oral test was the instrument used to collect the data. The data
was measured quantitatively through parametric statistic by using SPSS 22 for windows.
The final result of descriptive statistic revealed that communicative procedure was
effective. It was proven since the students’ achievement of post-test (58.89) was higher
than the mean score of pre-test (26.67). After analyzing the data to a paired samples t-test,
it was found that there was a positive and significant difference in the mean scores between
the pre-test and the post-test, t(df=17)=9.796 at p=.000; it meant that the null hypothesis
was rejected and alternative hypothesis was accepted. Thus, this procedure was
significantly effective in teaching speaking for EFL learners. Considering the process and
the results of this research, the present researcher suggested the English teacher to use a
communicative procedure in teaching speaking.
