Abstract :
The purpose of this research was to investigate the English Speaking Zone
(ESZ) program organized by students association of English language department
of Hamzanwadi University. This research used descriptive qualitative research
design. The participants of this study were consisted of 16 students from the
second, fourth, and sixth semester and the organizer of the English speaking zone
program. To find the result of this research, the data was collected by three
research instrument: observation, questionnaire, semi-structured interview. There
were 16 students who participated in this study from second, fourth, and sixth
semester and the organizer of the program, from the data analysis, it was found
that the majority of the students have positive perception toward the English
speaking zone (ESZ) implementation. The research finding shows that obtaining
the goal of the program and the common use of mother tongue is main problem in
implementing the program. It is also found that the factors contributing to the
problem are internal, such as the participants’ lack of confidence to speak and lack
of vocabulary and external factor, such as there still some lecturers who use
Indonesia language in the classroom and less support of facility from the
institution. Based on this finding, it is important for both the organizers of the
ESZ program and institution to have better collaboration to implement this
project, so that the students are motivated to join the program.
