Abstract :
This study aimed at examining the effectiveness of story completion
technique in teaching speaking for the tenth graders of SMA Birrul Walidain NW
Rensing in the academic year 2017-2018. The problems formulated in this study
were (1) Is story completion effective to improve the speaking ability? (2) How
effective is story completion to improve the speaking ability? The design of this
study was pre-experimental design. The sample of this study was 24 out of 72
students of Class X Social1. To collect the data, a pre-test and a post-test were
given to the sample. To analyze the data, the present researcher applied SPSS 22
for Windows. After submitting the data to paired sample t-test, the present
researcher found that there was a significant difference in the mean scores
between the pre-test and the post-test, which was t(df=23) = 23.76 at p < .0.1; it
means that the alternative hypothesis was accepted. In short, story completion
technique was significantly effective in teaching speaking for the tenth graders of
SMA Birrul Walidain NW Rensing in the academic year 2017-2018. Considering
the process and the result of this study, the present researcher suggests that
English teachers use story completion technique in teaching speaking.
