Abstract :
This research aimed at knowing about teaching learning process through
pen pal and students’ perception in writing ability through pen pal. This research
used qualitative research. The subject of this research was the students of XI
Bahasa MA Muallinin NW Pancor consisted of fifteen students. In addition,
observation and semi structured interview used for collecting the data. Finding
revealed that pen pal project can be used to be the effective way to teach the
students in writing class. It was not only to enhance the students writing ability but
also to enhance the students’ reading habit. It was applied through some steps,
first, teacher explained the students about the material, second one is teacher
explained the students about what pen pal is, third one is the teacher instructed the
students to make letter, fourth one is the teacher brought the letter from pen pal,
the last one is the teacher and the students read and analysed the letter together. In
addition, Based on the result of observation and interview, the students stated that
“wrote letter by pen pal method as like write message in cellular phone.â€
