Abstract :
Keyword : Speaking activity, english conversation club
This study is aimed at describing the speaking activities in English
conversation club at SMA N 1 Sragen in academic year 2016/2017. It is
conducted to know what the tutor strategies used in English conversation club,
what the difficulties faced by the tutor and member in English conversation club,
what the members motivated in joining the English conversation club. Based on
the pre research, it was found that there are speaking activities namely debate and
speech. This extracurricular done one time in a week, that is in Thursday. The
activities are being in shifts between debate and speech. There are two teachers as
the tutors in English conversation club.
The researcher uses descriptive qualitative to analyze the data. The
researcher collects the data by observing the speaking activities in English
conversation club, conducting the interview, and documenting some important
data that support to this research. The data are from interview script, field note,
and work plan. The techniques of analyzing data are reduction the data, data
analysis, presenting the data and drawing conclusion. The subject of this study is
the members joined in the English conversation club at SMA N 1 Sragen. The
object of this study focuses on speaking activities in English conversation club.
Based on the class observation, interview, and document, the researcher draws
some conclusion about the strategy used in speaking activities, the problem and
the members motivate.
The result of the research shows that English conversation club activities are
debate and speech, the strategy used by the tutor in speaking activity in English
conversation club is variations for debate activity the tutor use Asian
Parliamentary Debate type, and the speech use strategies namely opinion
exchange, current event and making a game. There are some problems faced by
the tutor also the member in English conversation club. The tutor‟s problems are
the members‟ lack of confidence when speaking, correcting the member mistakes
well, dividing time between speech and debate activity, the lack of members‟
consistency in the attendance, while, the members‟ problems are low selfconfidence,
lack of vocabulary, pronunciation.
