Abstract :
Teaching speaking using synchronous and asynchronous during COVID-19
benefited both lecturer and students by internet. This study was intended to analyze
the students? synchronous and asynchronous online learning in their speaking skill
comprehension. It examined three investigated variables, namely as follows: the
implementation of online education in the speaking class; the obstacle for lecturer
and students in asynchronous and synchronous learning; the significant impact of
using a synchronous and asynchronous method in students? speaking
comprehension. This study was conducted at the speaking class for third-semester
students? in a private university in Yogyakarta in the academic year 2021-2022 by
involving 20 students. The data were analyzed descriptively through
instrumentation using a questionnaire, interview, and documentation. Findings
indicated as follows: students have good improvement in pronunciation and fluency
of speaking aspects and other obstacles is internet connection problem although the
lecturer and students used asynchronous and synchronous learning; both lecturer
and students often experienced in connection with signal problems; the significant
impact was the students? less pressure for the lecturer?s giving creative media and
exciting material. The data and information of this study can be used both
practically and conceptually for relevant future research.
