Abstract :
Electrical energy is one of the important needs in coastal communities,
especially in ports that are difficult to reach by the national electricity grid. To
meet these needs various energy diversification efforts have been carried out, such
as the potential utilization of sea water currents, the purpose of this study is to
determine the speed of ocean currents, ocean current energy. Local research in
the Bengkalis Strait between Sumatra Island and Bengkalis Island, this research
method of measuring ocean currents and energy generated from the sea current
velocity of the study area. Research shows the location of sea current turbine
placement in accordance with a place which is close to a harbor that has no
lighting. Based on the results of conventional measurements of currents obtained
an average speed of sea currents of 8.76 m / s, with these conditions the speed of
sea currents of 0.45 m / s in which time from 14:00 to 17:00 local time. So the
results of the speed of the ocean currents have the potential to be used as power plants for sea water currents.
