Abstract :
The process of machining fineness or the level of surface roughness of the workpiece
produced greatly affects the quality of the product, by observing from several
parameters one of them is the use of coolant or lubricant. This experiment made several
variations of the use of coolant between coolant water, oil and air in the ST 40 steel
turning process. The parameters used were 3 mm cutting depth, 300 Rpm spindle
rotation speed. After that, the measurement of the average surface roughness (Ra) is
done to determine the lowest variation of the (Ra) value produced. The use of coolant
water coolant obtained an average surface roughness value (Ra) 4,479?m, the use of oil
coolant obtained an average surface hardness value (Ra) 3,623?m, the use of air
conditioning liquid obtained an average surface roughness value (Ra) 5,338 ?m. So that
from the ST 40 steel turning process using the HSS lathe tool the lowest surface
roughness value was obtained using oil cooling media.
