Abstract :
The use of plastic is increasing as the population in Indonesia grows.
Meanwhile, the biodegradable nature of plastics and the insistence of
environmentalists who want plastic use to be reduced, efforts need to be made to
turn plastic waste into more useful products. One alternative to transforming
plastic waste is to make one of the mixed materials for making paving blocks. To
determine the variations used against the compressive strength and absorbency of
paving block water is the purpose of this study.
The purpose of this study was to determine the variation used for the
compressive strength and water absorption of paving blocks. The materials used
are HDPE type plastic which comes from oil bottles and LDPE which comes from
plastic bags as a substitute for portland cement and sand as a filler. The pure
variations used are 80% HDPE plastic: 20% sand, 80% LDPE plastic: 20% sand,
and variations of a mixture of 40% HDPE + 40% LDPE plastic: 20% sand.
The test results showed that the highest compressive strength value of
HDPE and LDPE plastic paving blocks, namely in pure variations of HDPE was
23.56 Mpa. While the lowest water absorption value of paving blocks was in the
variation of a mixture of HDPE 40% + LDPE 40% : Sand 20% was 0.61%.
Furthermore, based on the quality requirements of SNI 03-0691-1996, the strength
value is included in the quality B used for parking yards and for the value of water
absorption including quality A which is used for road use.
