Abstract :
Block paving is one of the ground surface covering materials used for hardening and
beautifying pedestrian sidewalks. It can also function to reduce standing water, therefore in
accordance with its use, compressive strength and water absorption are the important aspects in
making block paving.
In this research, LDPE plastic, tire rubber charcoal and sand were used for the basic
ingredients of paving blocks while compressive strength testing and water absorption testing were
used to identify the ability of paving blocks to withstand compressive forces and the ability to
absorb water. There were three variations tested, namely variation A with 40% plastic, 10% tire
rubber charcoal, 50% sand; variation B with 30% plastic, 20% tire rubber charcoal, 50% sand;
variation C with 20% plastic, 30% tire rubber charcoal, 50% sand; and three specimens in each
variation.
Based on the testing results, variation A had the average compressive strength of 18.67 MPa
and the water absorption of 0.39. Variation B had the average compressive strength of 8.95 MPa
and the water absorption of 1.61 Variation C had the average compressive strength of 5.59 MPa
and the water absorption of 2.92. In conclusion, the higher the plastic content in the paving blocks
increased the compressive strength value and decreased the water absorption ability
