Abstract :
Aluminium 3xxx.x is a casting category aluminium alloy (Al-Fe-Si alloy) which is heat-
treatable and has a wide range of industrial applications. In this study Al-Fe-Si was chosen
as the material for the bogie wheel tank Amx-13. This caused the material used for steel tank
bogie wheels must have high mechanical properties to withstand all loads. To get aluminium
with the desired character, one must go through a treatment process, one of which is solid
solution treatment, single stage aging, and double stage aging.
This study aimed to identify the effects of variations aging on surface hardness, impact
strength, and the influence of microstructure on Al-Fe-Si material which was heated for 5
hours at a temperature of 540 oC, then quenched with water cooling media at the temperature
of 65 oC. The process was continued to the single stage aging at 150 oC for 5 hours and the
double stage aging at 150oC for 2 hours, then held back at 180 oC for 2.5 hours. From this
process, the following research results were obtained: (1) from the results of the double stage
aging, the highest hardness value was 72.01 BHN (Brinell Hard Number), (2) with the same
process, the energy absorbed, and the highest impact values were 0.82 Joule and 0.01 J/mm2,
(3) from the observation of the microstructure in the double stage aging process, there was a
change in the Si phase which generated an elongated, needle-like, and spread morphology.
