Abstract :
The need for electricity today keeps increasing along with the increasing number of
residents and infrastructure buildings. The limited number of powerplants cannot keep up with the
growth of industry or the socioeconomic level of the community. On the other hand, the fulfillment
of electricity development for the general public, especially in rural areas, is still quite low. To
meet the electrical energy, an economical, safe and reliable plant was built by utilizing the
alternator as a vertical type wind power plant (vertical axis).
The pinwheel used in the study was a U-type Savonius pinwheel with a 40 cm diameter and
a 50 cm height with 4 pieces of blades and then measurements were taken with a difference of
distance of 100 cm, 50 cm, and 35 cm with the same speed on the tornado fan as a wind medium.
Testing was carried out in Fenomena laboratory, ITDA using anemometer, multimeter, and
tachometer. Then the average values of wind speed, voltage, current, and output power were taken.
The results showed firstly, at the 35 cm distance with the turbine rotation of 212.1 rpm, the
output power was 0.27 Watts and the efficiency was 1.14%. Secondly, at the 50 cm distance with
the turbine rotation of 173.3 rpm, the output power was 0.19 Watts and the efficiency was 1.83%.
The last, at the 100 cm distance with the turbine rotation of 146.6 rpm, the output power was 0.12
Watts and the efficiency was 0.01%.
