Abstract :
The presence of machines in the industrial field often gives the effect of sound
noise. For such noise reduction purposes, silencer material is needed. The sound
damping material used can come from synthetic fibers, particles, and natural
fibers. By utilizing composite technology and special treatment, corn cob powder
is used as a composite that performs to dampen sounds. The research method used
is the Hand Lay-Up method. This study was conducted using corn cob powder
fillers using variations in filler volume fractions of 0%, 45%, 55%, and 65%. The
results obtained from the study, namely the addition of corn cob powder to epoxy
resin could increase the ability to attenuate the sound.
The best damping ability was found in a composite with the 65% corn cob
powder with a Noice Absorption Coefficient (NAC) value = 0.275 at the frequency
of 160 Hz, according to ISO 11654:1997 standards. In this test, the ideal composite
material used as a sound-cancelling material was a composite with corn cob
powder of 65% and for the best bending strength at a variation of 65% corn cob
powder of 17.91 MPa.
