Abstract :
Natural fiber is a material that can be used as a substitute for synthetic fibers in
the manufacture of composites especially teak sawdust which is easy to find because
it is a waste in the process of making wood crafts. Therefore, the use of teak wood
fiber as filler can also be useful to reduce waste.
This study aimed to investigate the effects of variations in the size of teak
sawdust on the physical and mechanical properties (impact testing, SEM testing, and
moisture content) on the composite boards. This study used variations of teak sawdust
with the sizes of 20, 60, and 100 mesh, with a volume fraction of 4% filler, and the
ratio of epoxy and hardener of 1: 1.
The results showed that the smaller size of the teak sawdust, the more significant
effects on the physical properties and composite mechanics were achieved. The
highest impact value as 0.1325 J/mm² and the lowest water content value as 1.5%
were achieved in the 100-mesh variation. The results of the SEM test indicated the
presence of matrix cracking and voids. This study has met the standard for applying
car bumper with a value of 0.016 J/mm², but has not met the standard for car bumper
moisture content which indicates below 0.10%.
