Abstract :
The development of composite material as a substitute for metal is quite desirable. This is because composites have mechanical properties that are corrosion resistant and environmentally friendly. The purpose of this study was to identify the hardness and flexural strength of carbon black reinforced epoxy composites so that they can be used in the household and automotive industries. The reinforcing material used in making composites was carbon black from incomplete combustion of diesel fuel with the Thermal Black Process method. The matrix used was Epoxy Resin Bakelite EPR 174 and Epoxy Hardener V-140. The Composite making method used the hand lay-up method. The variations of the testing using carbon black volume fraction were 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% using stirring rotation 885 Rpm for 15 minutes and drying temperature of 50°C for 150 minutes. The next was the hardness test, bending test, and SEM. From the results of testing the hardness and bending testing, the data are as follows. The highest hardness was obtained from composites with a volume fraction of 15% at 46.4 kg/mm² while the composite with the lowest hardness was a composite with a 0% volume fraction of 23.5 kg/mm². For bending testing, the highest flexural strength was obtained in the composite with a volume fraction of 20% of 0.29 MPa while the lowest flexural strength was a composite with a volume fraction of 0% of 0.052 MPa. SEM testing was carried out on the fracture of the bending test specimen with a volume fraction of 20%. Based on the results of the test it was seen that there were void, transganular and agglomeration that occurred in carbon black.
