Abstract :
Indonesia is one of the largest archipelago countries which is rich in
seawater, because Indonesia is located in the midst of seawater with thousands of
islands. However, this does not guarantee that the livelihood of people living in
the coast to get fresh water and salt. Lack of fresh water and salt are major
problems for coastal communities. To obtain fresh water they have to buy fresh
water. One of the right solutions to overcome this problem is by distillation by
utilizing the abundant sea water and then processing it into fresh water and salt.
The result of observation indicated the value of the temperature changed
every day depending on the amount of intensity of sunlight received. The average
environmental temperature obtained from testing for six days ranged 31,08°C -
38,26°C. In this study, the average temperature of the glass was 33,48°C -
47,88°C. The water temperature obtained in this experiment was 32°C - 56,42°C.
The result of the study showed that solar power destilators could convert 10
liters of sea water to 5,8 liters of fresh water within a period of six days. When the
ambient temperature dropped, the temperature of the glass decreased. This is
because the temperature of the glass was directly effected by the temperature of
the environment. The water temperature did not directly affect the ambient
temperature, because water was a good heat storage. Besides producing fresh
water the rest of the sea water distillation also produced 0,190 kg of salt.
