Abstract :
The needs of a natural fiber for the application in the field of automotive components not just be limited to the interior of but also the exterior. Factors affect the property of mechanical composite of a sandwich is the orientation of the size and shape of fiber and fiber material amplifier element that determines the mechanical properties of composite. The materials of this research were palm fiber, unsaturated polyester 157 BQTN-EX resin, zincon marine sawdust waste powder and urea formaldehyde. This specimen was made by press printing method with variations in skin thickness (2, 3, 4 mm) and core thickness (10 mm). The impact test of sandwich composites refers to the ASTM D-5942 standard by using a charpy impact tester. The method used in the composite manufacturing process was the hand lay-up method. The results showed the impact strength of composite palm sugar core composites of sengon sea wood saws with skin thickness 2, 3, 4 mm was 0.0210 J/mm 2 , 0.0235 J/mm 2 , 0.0230 J/mm 2 and the particle wood was 0.0050 J/mm 2 . The highest value was found in the 3 mm sandwich skin composite with a value of 0.0235 J/mm 2 . The morphological test results in the 3 mm skin sample showed cracks and pullout fibers. This was because in the process of making composites there was an uneven mixture of matrices so that they clumped and caused cracks. In addition, it was also caused by not maximizing the bond between powder and palm fiber as reinforcement with the polyester matrix.
