Abstract :
Aluminum 2024 T3 is a difficult material for fusion welding. Therefore, the
method used for welding aluminum is friction stir welding. The weakness of the
friction stir welding process is the decrease in the tensile strength of the welding
results compared to the tensile strength of the base metal. To increase the tensile
strength of the welding results, an age hardening process is carried out on the
specimens, which are 3 (three) stages in the age hardening process. The age
hardening process starts with solution treatment then quenching and finally
artificial aging.
The solution treatment process is heated at a temperature of 500
oC with a
holding time of 1 hour and cooled rapidly using water to room temperature. Then
proceed with the artificial aging process, namely reheating at temperature
variations of 145oC, 150
oC, and 165oC with a holding time of 6 hours. The results
obtained showed an increase in the maximum tensile strength, yield strength,
maximum ultimate strain, and modulus of elasticity in the specimens after the age
hardening process. The highest tensile strength, yield strength, and modulus of
elasticity were at the artificial aging temperature of 155
oC. And the highest
maximum ultimate strain is at the artificial aging temperature of 145oC.
