Abstract :
Drilling process is a machining process that is often carried out in the
manufacturing process and aircraft maintenance. Drilling process is carried out
with very accurate work on aircraft material, which is evaluated based on
performance characteristics such as surface roughness and related to cutting
parameters such as cutting speed and feed rate, so an analysis is nedded to
determine the parameters used in the drilling process to improve quality of the
results drilling process.
This research is focused on composite materials used in aircraft. The
method used is to look at the results of the surface roughness value on the hole
walls as a result of the drilling process using drilling parameters such as cutting
speed and feed rate. The specimen used in this study is a composite E-Glass fiber
with the direction of the orientation of the fiber using an angle of 90o
and an angle
of 45o with polyester resin, respectively.
The results showed that the lowest surface roughness value on the hole
wall was 28.97 µm in the drilling process parameter Rpm 1860 FR 0.038 and the
highest was 37.78 µm in the drilling process parameter Rpm 4540 FR 0.076.
From the analysis results of testing the surface roughness value of the hole wall
from the drilling process using a milling machine with HSS chisels on the E-Glass
fiber polyester resin composite material, that the smaller the engine rotation speed
and the feed rate, the smaller the resulting surface roughness value
