Abstract :
ABSTRACT English is by far the most commonly studied foreign language in the world and became important in any scope of our lives. Speaking is considered as a crucial part of the language learning process and the most difficult skills learners have to face. Self-confidence is a variable that related to speaking achievement. This study aimed to determine whether there is correlation between students? self-confidence in correlation with their speaking achievement at a vocational high school in Palembang. The total number of population was 100 students. The sample was 57 students taken by purposive sampling technique. The instruments in collecting data were questionnaire and speaking test. The questionnaire was used to collect the data of students? self-confidence and speaking test was used to collect the data of speaking achievement. In analyzing the data, the writer used Pearson Product Moment Formula. Since the value was 0.714 (>0.05), it can be concluded that there was no correlation between students? self-confidence and the speaking achievement of the eleventh graders of a vocational high school Palembang. The implications of this research are for the field of education. This research is expected to be a reference for further researchers. Through this research, it is also hoped that teachers and students will not only develop and pay attention to learning but also pay attention to non-linguistic and linguistic aspects that can affect the level of learning, especially English.
