Abstract :
This study was conducted on the consideration that now days the number
of people who study English is highly increasing due to the need of English as the
International language and as the way to connect to the wide world as well. That
kind of thing also happens in University of Muhammadiyah Gresik where the
numbers of students who learn English keep increasing. It proves by the students
who take the major of English department in University of Muhammadiyah
Gresik. Not only the students who come from inside Gresik but also the students
who come from outside Gresik or even outside Indonesia or it calls EFL students.
The EFL students in University of Muhammadiyah Gresik learn English in
English Department. In every process of learning, we all need a kind of thing that
can trigger us to keep learning and that is called as motivation. The same concept
happens for the EFL students as well. That is why this study was about motivation
of EFL students in learning English.
Department students in learning English. This study divide the kinds of
motivation into two kinds, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. There are three
instruments used in this study and they are interview, observation, and document.
The participants who involve in this study are five EFL students in University of
Muhammadiyah Gresik starting from the lowest and highest semester.
EFL students in learning English. It also revealed that some of student was
motivated most by intrinsic motivation, meanwhile others was motivated most by
extrinsic motivation. From the five participants who involved in this study, it was
revealed that two participants had intrinsic motivation while the three other had
extrinsic motivation as the most influential motivation that influenced them in
learning English. While for the process of how the two motivations (both intrinsic
and extrinsic motivation) influence them was by the time they learnt English with
different way.
