Abstract :
Motivation is the crucial element in learning process. It influences learning process, quality of thinking, and information processing as well as an individual?s motivation to learn. There are two types of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Students need motivation to increase their interest in learning English. Therefore, the writer was interested in investigating this problem. This study was entitled ?A Study on The Students? Motivation in Learning English in Language Program of SMAN 2 Batu. The purpose of this study was to know the students? motivation and the most dominant kind of motivation. In this study, the writer used the descriptive qualitative design. She also used the population research, she was taken all of the students of language program of SMAN 2 Batu. In collecting the data, two types of instrument were used including observation and Likert scale. The data of the study were analyzed by using the procedures such as developing research instruments, analyzing the data, and taking conclusion. The result of this study showed that only one student (3.70 %) had very high motivation. 11 students (40.74 %) had high motivation. 12 students (44.44 %) was categorized as students who have average motivation. In addition, the rest 3 students (11. 11 %) were categorized as students who have low motivation. In general, their motivation was average. The writer also found that intrinsic motivation was more dominant or influential than extrinsic motivation.
