STUDY ON LANGUAGE USED BY THE MEMBER OF FRIENDSTER IN WRITING TESTIMONIAL IN INTERNET: ANALYSIS ON ITS COLLOQUIAL WORDS

Abstract :
There are many language varieties found in the internet, one of them is colloquial words in Friendster testimonial. Colloquial is ordinary, relaxed, informal speech such as using contractions, using connecting words and phrases, using abbreviated utterances, using many words and expressions we would avoid in formal context, and may using swear words with some freedom and so on. Colloquial words used in Friendster testimonial usually have shorter form than the standard words. Even some of them are combining letters and numbers but we still can read them as the proper language. This research aimed at finding colloquial words and technical terms used to form colloquial words in Friendster testimonial. The design of this research is descriptive qualitative. The object analyzed are Friendster Testimonial writings cited in www.friendster.com on October 2006. This research used document analysis and non participant observation as research instruments. Based on the analyzed data, there were 61 colloquial words and 9 technical terms. Those technical terms can be divided into 2? the first is technical terms which support the theory such as clipping, acronyms, hypocorism, and blending. The second is technical terms which do not support the theory such as number as word, number and letter as word, one letter as word, reducing letter, and changing spelling. However, most of the words do not obey the proper spelling, but we can still read them as the proper language. This phenomenon could threat the existence of standard language. On the other hand, to the beginner of English learner, this kind of words may be confusing. It is also proved that colloquial words were used in informal speech with relaxed situation. The users of colloquial words were feeling free and arbitrary to create new colloquial words.
