Abstract :
Crowding is a subjective perception of a person against the number of people who are too much in a certain space which refers to negative or unpleasant feelings felt by individuals as a reaction to the situation around him in a neighborhood, which was marked by personal space is violated, the disruption of privacy, and disruption of territoriality. Environmental conditions are crowded and congested resulting in individuals who have excessive stimulus so that the individual must adapt by choosing stimuli that are considered relevant and important from a variety of stimuli received and give little attention to the stimuli that are considered irrelevant and not important. In an effort to adjust to the situation of information overload, seasonal residents become indifferent to each other and less responsive. They minimize the social inputs and show attitudes are not responsive. This is done by withdrawing or reducing social contact with others. The study was a correlational study, in which the population is the entire population of immigrants who live in dense settlements Cipto Mulyo Malang District, amounting to 298 residents. With purposive sampling, obtained 98 research subjects. The instrument used to retrieve data is by using the scale of distress scale has 45 items and the stress scale, amounting to 31 items. Data collection was conducted on December 7 to 13 January 2006. From the data obtained on the subject made the basis of validity and reliability analysis. Data analysis technique used is the product moment correlation analysis using SPSS for Windows version 10.00. The results of this study indicate that there is a positive relationship between crowding with stress on seasonal residents. It can be seen from the value of r = 0.660 and p = 0.000. Interpretation of the relationship between crowding with stress is in the medium category.
