Abstract :
Based on the preliminary observation on the SD Muhammadiyah 4 Batu. The researcher found that teachers got the training about the use English as a medium of Instruction from Directorate of Research and Community Services of UMM. The researcher was joining several times in this training then researcher considers that this innovation was brilliant. The researcher was interested in teachers’ questions in Elementary school, especially in teaching - learning science because the appropriate types of questions play an important role in helping students to construct knowledge. By this reason, this study were aimed at getting information related to the teachers’ questions, type of questions, and student’s responses related to the use of English as medium of instruction in science class at SD Muhammadiyah 4 Batu. Concerning the research design, this study used descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of this study were five science teachers who taught in the different classes, 1 until grade 5. The first observation was conducted on 13th, 14th, 16th, and 17th May 2013 and the second observation was conducted on 20th, 24th, and 27th May 2013. In this study, the researcher used one kind of instrument to collect the data and information. It was observation. The researcher used non-participation observation and utilizing observation sheet and video recorder to get data. Furthermore, to analyze the data, this study used descriptive analysis. The result of this study showed that simple question is often used by the teachers. The type of question that was used by the teachers was lower type of question with knowledge and comprehension levels of thinking. And the students’ responses varied. There were seven types of responses appeared in the observation result. They were choral, confusion work-oriented, non verbal, open-ended, confusion non work-oriented, silence, and laughter types of response. Based on the result of this study, it can be concluded that science teachers at SD Muhammadiyah 4 Batu applied English as a medium of instruction in the teaching – learning activity. Teachers dominantly used simple questions in the lower type of question and the students’ responses dominantly used choral response.
