Abstract :
Learner centered approach is a new paradigm in language teaching program. Thus, in order to follow the current issue in language teaching, course designer tries to make the course related to the need based course. The information regarding need analysis can be obtained to whoever related to educational system, for example: the students, the teacher, the institutional, the parents, and the society. This study is merely limited to figure out the current need of fifth semester student in joining writing III course. Collected information in this study can be references in developing writing course The population of this study was the fifth semester student of English department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The population approximately consists of 254 students while the sample consists of 58 students. In collecting the data, the writer used closed-ended questionnaire. The writer used mean formula in analyzing the data. Therefore, this study was descriptive quantitative. The finding from this study revealed that being able to do essay assignment was the primary need of students with mean score of 8.1. Also, the preferred activity chosen by most of students was “discussing the framework of composition in the class and continuing the task at home individually” with mean score of 6.7. This finding concluded that the students joining Writing III class tended to chose academic-related task like being able to make essay assignment and the preferred activity chosen by most of students was discussing the framework of composition in the class and continuing the task at home individually.
