Abstract :
Learning strategies are important ways for students to make learning easier, faster, more enjoyable, and more effective so that they can understand well about the lesson. This is especially for the students of Acceleration class. In this class, the students have to learn and memorize all materials faster than those who are in regular class. Therefore, the researcher wants to know the kinds of learning strategies and the strategy that is mostly used by the students of acceleration class. This research used descriptive quantitative because the data were collected in the form of words and numbers that showed the frequency of learning strategies that the students used. The subjects of this research were 10th grade students of Acceleration class at MAN 3 Malang that consisted of 14students. The data were obtained through a questionnaire and observation to get more valid data. The results of this research showed that the 10th grade students of Acceleration class at MAN 3 Malang used all of learning strategies in learning English. These are memory-related strategies with the mean score was 41, cognitive strategies 36.4, compensation strategies 36.8, meta-cognitive strategies 39.2, affective strategies 34.4 and social strategies 36.4. The most dominant strategy that they used was memory-related strategy. In this strategy the students can memorize the lessons which help them store and retrieve information. In conclusion, learning strategies used by 10th grade students of acceleration class varied based their characteristics. These strategies were used to improve students’ abilities in learning English. Therefore, the students of acceleration class at MAN 3 Malang are prospective language learners or gifted students who have the intelligence above average.
