Abstract :
This study attempted to investigate the socio-cultural factors which challenge English teaching in Pemana Island, one of Indonesian remote areas. Qualitative approach was employed in attempt to dig out the comprehensive data through participant observation and semi-structured interview. The subjects of this study were 2 English teachers, 7 students, and 6 parents. This study revealed three socio-cultural aspects which challenge the English teaching in Pemana Island; (1) the challenge of economic situation, (2) the challenge of national demands and society condition, (3) the challenge of societies believe about English. Several suggestions are proposed for the improvement of English teaching in Indonesia.
