Abstract :
Background: : The number of electronic smokers increased from 0.3% in 2011 to 2.5% in 2015. Previous studies have shown that there are harmful substances in e-cigarette which also found in the conventional ones. This leads to the increasing amount of goblet cells in the trachea.Objective:Finding the effect of e-cigarette and conventional cigarette to the amount of goblet cells in the trachea in male white rats (Rattus norvegicus strain wistar).Methods: Experimental research with post test control only group design. 16 rats were divided into 4 groups: normal group, conventional cigarettes with 2.3 mg nicotine, e-cigarettes with 3 mg nicotine, and e-cigaretteswith 0 mg nicotine. The trachea was taken to provide histologic preparation with HE staining and observed with light microscope (400x). Data was analysed using One-way ANOVA and Post-Hoc test.Resultsand discussion:One-way ANOVA test showed significant difference (p = 0,000) among groups, the Post-Hoc test showed significant differences (p = 0,000) between normal group and all treatment groups and there was no significant differences among treatment groups (p = 1,000).This is because the toxic materials such as carbonmonoxide, propylene glycol, formaldehyde, nitrosamine, and other carcinogenic materials.Conclusions:Smoke exposure of electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) and conventional cigarettes have the same effect on increasing the amount of goblet cells in the rats trachea.
