Abstract :
This study was conducted with two main objectives, there were (1) to find out students' preferences for reading material that they would like to use, (2) to discover the benefits of reading by students' own preference for their reading comprehension. Qualitative research method was applied in this study with two instruments used which were questionnaire and interview guide to obtain the data. The subjects of this study were selected by using simple random sampling. There were 35 students of third semester of English Language Education Department selected as the participants. The data were analyzed by calculating each item of the questionnaire to obtain the final result in the form of a percentage. It used a general formula where the total choice of results divided by the total number of participants and then multiplied by 100%. After the final percentage results were obtained, the data were interpreted in detail in the form of a description. From the findings, it was found that the third semester students preferred novels as their reading material which obtained 54,2%. They also preferred the genre of fiction readings (31,4%) which they think were more interesting and entertaining. Furthermore, the findings showed that there were lot of benefits when they read using their own preference on reading; (1) the students were able to comprehend the content of reading easily, (2) the students became more excited to read, (3) the students have broader knowledge, (4) the students were able to get attached and focused on the reading. Several studies have been conducted regarding to reading preferences, but it have not been fully discussed reading preference at the tertiary level. This study implies that students at the tertiary level preferred novels as their reading material and fiction as their favored genre. The findings were signified that students were more motivated and enthusiastic to read with such material.
