Abstract :
Structure is one of the important language components that must be provided beside vocabulary and pronunciation. As other lessons, teaching structure also needs well-planed teaching. Strategy is the planning or as a specific approach to solve a problem or task by manipulating certain information for achieving a particular end. Related with the statement above, this study is focused on the strategies in teaching structure I used by the teacher of English Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. Consequently, the purpose of this study is to know the strategies used by the teacher of English Department in teaching structure I at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. In the present study, the researcher used descriptive qualitative research as the appropriate research design. He took four structure I teachers who were teaching in English Department of University Muhammadiyah Malang Academic Year 2007/2008 as the research subject. The instruments used to collect the data were observation and interview. The researcher found that two of structure I teachers applied Expository Strategy and others applied Imitation Modeling Strategy. He also found that there was no single best strategy in teaching because each of the teaching strategies had strengths and weaknesses. The strategy used in teaching learning process depended on the students need and how long the students should moved from one strategy to another strategy. At last, hopefully the result of this study could give benefits for the teachers and the future researchers. It is also suggested that the teachers could apply various strategies in the class to make the students more active and to improve the student’s interest. Cause of the limitation of this study, the future researchers are suggested to continue on the similar research concerning with the teaching strategy used by the native English teacher.
