Abstract :
Scabies is a common skin disease among santri of Pondok Pesantren (Islamic Boarding School students = IBSs). It is caused by infestation of Sarcoptes scabiei mite spreading from human to human, from animal to animal or from animal to human. The aim of this research was to know the prevalence of scabies and the correlation between environmental factors and health behavior to the prevalence of scabies among students of Sidogiri IBS Kecamatan Kraton – Kabupaten Pasuruan. This research was designed as a cross sectional observational analitic study, during December 2008 – January 2009. The sample was 98 students taken by simple random sampling methode. The variables were environmental (socialculture) factor, health behavior (knowledge, attitude, practice and personal hygiene) on scabies, and prevalence of scabies. Each parameter of these variables were analyzed by using statistical descriptive and presented by distributionfrequent table. Further, each variable with prevalence of scabies was analyzed by using contingent correlation and chisquare test. The results showed, environmental (socialculture) condition (54.1%), health behavior of scabies i.e: knowledge level (80.6%), attitude (64.3%) and personal hygiene (53.1%) were good respectively, but the practice of scabies (54.1%) was bad. The prevalence of scabies was 15.3%. Based on the results of contingent correlation and chi square test, there was significant correlation (p<0.05) between environmental (socialculture) factors and health behavior of students to scabies. The highest risk factor was knowledge level about scabies (PR=6,148). The better environmental (socialculture) and health behaviour will make students more protected from scabies. It is suggested for IBS management to pay attension for environmental and health behavior.
