Abstract :
Research on AISI 4140 steel which was treated with carburizing heat in a chamber containing kapok carbon with the addition of calcium carbonate and quenched in water media, then continued with the austempering process at a temperature of 850?C and drop temperature at a temperature of 300?C with a holding time of 50s, 100s, 150s, 200s, 300s, followed by quenching with water. This process is carried out in order to determine the changes in the morphology of the microstructure and hardness of AISI 4140 steel. Microstructure testing using a microscope type X1005 TTEPPL with ASTM E3 standards and hardness testing using Rockwell test equipment (HRA) with ASTM E18 standards. Based on the results of the Rockwell hardness test (HRA), the results of the number of grains and hardness values indicate that the raw material is in the pearlite phase. From the results of grain analysis using ImageJ software, the results of the microstructure test were compared with the results of the Rockwell hardness test (HRA), on a brush grain of 100x100 m² with a hardness of 65.1 HRA and in the carburizing process of 5 with a holding time, the hardness value of 56.6 HRA was the same. such as Raw material, namely the pearlite phase.
